Description

This small walrus ivory piece is from Alaska where Eskimos have stories about this mythological being (but not Inuit in Eastern Arctic).  The figure is characterized by a pointed head, big cheekbones and wide smile, big ears and slanted eyes and a large belly with nipples and navel carved in detail. This sculpture is carved from walrus tusk and is not for sale outside of Canada (per CITES).   Based on the age of the walrus ivory this sculpture is estimated to be 1960 or earlier.
