Inuit Heritage Collection
This Inuit art collection focuses on authentic and spiritual works from 1990 and earlier. It is reflective of a time when Inuit people still depended greatly upon hunting to survive. The animals they hunted were honoured in their art. Inuit sculptures in the last Century were often carved by hand, not with power tools, and the materials used were local Arctic stone, antler and whale bone. Artists signed their work in syllabic characters, in numbers assigned to each Inuk, or not at all. As you glance through this gallery study all the different ways that Inuit sculptors carve eyes.
