Spirit Muskox Carving

Description

Spirit Muskox carvings are quite rare. Their rarity is likely due to limited muskox contact with the Inuit communities.  This piece features a primitive face with antler corks for eyes and antler horns. With power tools in more recent years, Inuit sculptors have popularized the muskox with deeply carved hair from the back to the ground.  This sculpture is an example of an earlier style.  This is a spirit muskox as denoted by the line running down the centre of the back.  The polished beautiful Arctic serpentine stone – green with ivory veins – lends itself to viewing the body as a landscape or abstract design.  Leaning disposition. Horns recently restored with authentic antler.
