Description

Polynesian Wooden Vessel (1800s). This unique, hand carved wooden vessel is distinguished by the large albatross heads on either end. There are patterns radiating from the middle of the body running lengthwise which have shared design patterns with West Coast First Nations. There is wear on the end of one side where the vessel was held against the side of the body. It is uncertain whether this piece was used for storage, ceremonial or harvesting purposes.  The opening along the top is only   1 2/8" - very difficult to carve out interior.
