Description

Screaming Beaver (1960s or 1970s).  Painted wood. No signature (possibly located under protective felt). Good perspective with above average carving talent. Likely carved by a very good amateur. Red felt covers base underneath.

This wooden sculpture is truly one of a kind because the subject is highly unusual. While carvings of beavers are fairly common, this beaver is screaming in pain and panic from being held in a leg hold trap. Steel toothed leg hold traps were banned in 1986. While leg hold traps are still used in Canada, animal welfare is considered when making public policy on trapping. It is estimated that there are 25,000 Aboriginal trappers in Canada today.
