Andre Bourgault Folk Art Bookends (pair)
Artist: Andre Bourgault (1898-1957). Carved signature on base of each piece.
Andre Bourgault is one of three famous carvring brothers from St.-Jean-Port Joli. He has several sculptures in the Canadian Museum of History, Musee McCort and the Musee de Sculpture sur bois des Anciens Canadiens. Andre tends to be more popular among museums and collectors than his brothers. Where they did many religious commissions, Andre strictly carved townspeople such as sailors, farmers, the elderly, etc. Bourgault's sculptures are superior in quality to all other St.-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec wood sculptors. This is demonstrated by the exquisitely carved faces and fingers, accurate perspective and natural poses.
Elderly couple bookends - estimate 1950's. The faces of this elderly couple are exceptional - especially the elderly woman. It seems that she can see into your soul. The condition of these carvings is consistent with age (75 years). Due to the soft pine wood and a couple of suspected falls from a bookshelf, there is damage to a hand and shoe on the elderly man and a broken shoe on the elderly woman. Note that negative spaces on the rocking chairs are not carved out.
Price is for the pair of book ends.
